VIA Lab's VL605 is a highly integrated single-chip USB-C or DP 2.1 to HDMI 2.1 protocol converter, designed for USB-C video dongles and USB-C multi-function docks. It integrates two-port USB-C PD 3.1 controllers and USB Billboard device, enabling a single VL605 to convert DP signals to 8K@60Hz HDMI output by DP Alt-Mode or USB4 DP tunneling, and simultaneously charge the connected USB PD host once external power is detected. When accompanied by VLI's diversified USB Hub controllers, the VL605 can create various USB-C multi-function dock applications with USB PD charge-through function at different USB speeds.
The DP receiver port supports up to HBR3 8.1Gbps data rate over 4 lanes, and the HDMI source supports both FRL and TMDS transmitter. The FRL transmitter supports data rates up to 12Gbps, and the TMDS transmitter supports up to 6Gbps. Both DP receiver and HDMI source support color formats of RGB 8/10/12 bpc and YCbCr 4:4:4/4:2:2/4:2:0 8/10/12 bpc. Audio output supports up to 8 channels of LPCM up to 192kHz sample rate with sample sizes of 16, 20, and 24 bits and various compressed audio encoding formats. The VL605 has built-in HDCP 1.4 and HDCP 2.3 repeater function with embedded keys. The DP DSC compressed stream can be decoded by VL605 to uncompressed format or passed through directly to the connected HDMI sink.VL605 also supports HDR metadata handling for static and dynamic HDR content transmission. DP 2.1 Autonomous mode and Source-controlled mode are supported on VL605 as well.
The VL605 has a built-in 8051 microcontroller with an interface to external SPI flash, which can store its firmware code in standalone SPI flash or share SPI flash with VLI PD/Hub controller. Firmware upgrades can be done by USB Billboard, I2C slave interface, or DP AUX channel. To avoid malicious FW code attacks, VL605 can perform secure FW update by built-in ECDSA verify. Nine GPIO pins are available for specific application usage. VL605 is available in QFN 68L (8x8x0.85 mm).
